With a strong interest in advocacy, Maria is dedicated to fostering more resources to individuals in underserved communities. Throughout her experience she has worked alongside a multitude of organizations which have given her the opportunity to collaborate with individuals who come from diverse backgrounds. This has strengthened her belief of the importance for more community based organizations in order for people to take advantage of all the opportunities needed to succeed. Prior to joining MCARE, Maria interned for the Florida Justice Center. There she focused on addressing a variety of problems that the formerly incarcerated experience by providing a holistic approach to case management which helps individuals successfully return to society. As a student at Florida International University, Maria has been involved within a multitude of student organizations. This includes her role as Vice President of the BC Community Project, a student organization dedicated to providing resources through community service as well as securing a pathway for transitional housing for the chronically homeless in South Florida. Maria is a first-generation Colombian American and she plans on pursuing a career in social work. In her free time she enjoys going to coffee shops and reading books.
